Jo Matthews
RMN (MH) Autism Practitioner
Jo Matthews is a registered Mental Health Nurse. Jo’s personal journey of self-discovery has pulled her towards supporting others searching answers for themselves. She advocates strongly for early diagnosis to identify strengths and reframe challenges as "differences" that may, or may not, require reasonable adjustments; moving towards deeper understanding and acceptance within the neurotypical world.
As a Psychology student, Jo worked with adults with neurological conditions and acquired brain injuries. She shifted her focus to support traumatised children across different countries—including India, America, France, and Wales—where she discovered the fun of working with children.
As well as parenting her own daughter singlehandedly for 16 years, she has worked within the Neurodevelopmental Team for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
Since qualifying as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMHN) a decade ago, and continuing work for CAMHS, she has dedicated her time to the support and advocacy of neurodivergent clients and their families; this has led her to working with substance misuse and homeless services, community learning disability teams, forensic healthcare, and community mental health teams.
Currently, she works for the NHS as part of a neurodevelopmental assessment team: providing pre-assessment support and conducting autism assessments. She also offers post-diagnostic, time-limited advocacy work to support seeking autism passports and navigating health, housing, and social care.
At Harley Row Clinic, Jo facilitates the ADOS face-to-face assessment and completing developmental histories through reference to the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) with children and young people and their families, in line with the DSM V criteria.
